When people go on overseas trips, they like to go to special places that are not usually visited by tourists. I asked myself if there were such places in Korea and I found one. Todok Workshop is a small workshop in Insa-dong that makes handcrafted seals.
The window of Todok Workshop displays eye-catching, handcrafted seals that capture the attention of passing tourists. When you open the door and enter the workshop, handcrafted seals with beautiful designs fill one side of the left wall. And, in one corner you will find clothes and cups with seals imprinted on them.
So many seal designs! Seals range from traditional designs that are customary to Insa-dong to designs that express phrases, animals, flowers, or Seoul landmarks, like Namsan Tower. You could spend hours just browsing all the varied seal designs.
Shall we look at how one is made? First, you have to choose your desired design. Then you must pick the type of stone and lettering. Next, you must write down the name to be engraved on the seal. The artist will then set an appropriate alignment of the lettering. After discussions with the customer, the artist will make the engraving. It takes between 5 to 10 minutes to compete the engraving, so you can look around the workshop or take a tour of Insa-dong while you wait.
